Are we to Fear God or Love Him?

May 14, 2007

Throughout the bible we are told to fear God.

Much like our children  fear the strict  parent, who has the job of being the disciplinarian, so too is our  fear of God. When you think about it , isn't that what most parents do, to gain a response from their own children? Punishment is used  for our own good, right? I suppose some parents feel that's the only way their children will respond? So is this the God we admire, love and cherish,  the God we want to do things? And if you had the choice, would you rather be loved or feared?

In today's world the word love has been seriously damaged. Just watch your television for a day,  and see all the bad behavior that people accept under  those words "but I love him?. Are just those words enough?

I truly believe, at this time in our spiritual journey's history, we need to reevaluate our idea of Love, God,  Fear and Acceptance and Behaviour.

So let us begin with Fear. I can certainly understand the fear of God.  I have come to understand that it wasnt really that I feared Him, as much as I feared His displeasure.  It was my understanding of the relationship, that made me feel as if He was the parent who held my love as a guillotine over my head. And if I  where to displease Him, I would indeed feel His wrath. That was my understanding of my God! The Father who could eat me alive, was the fear of God inherent in my nature.

I also remember I  had a tremendous LOVE  in my life. That was for the Christ. Christ was my solace, the Best part of me, my life, my comforter, my Heart and my Soul. He was truly  the Mother I always wanted. The one who would accept all that I did, while loving me through my mistakes, by taking me to His breast.

My love for Christ remains truly who I am. He still is the True Love of my Life, only now,  I also feel a part of the disciplinarian in me as well. I do see the wholeness of this . The Father Mother Principle, that we see as our God.

A Loving but Reasoned disciplinarian. Not the God that would eat me alive, but rather the One who expects  me to  always give my best. THe God who wants my life to express the goodness of character of the Christ.

Who weilds His strength and His Truth, with the firmness of a steel blade.  The sword He gives to a character that understands but  doesn't yield, to the weakness of our human nature. Who no longer can accept our  excuses,  lies to ourself or others, or lack of courage  to stand up for what is right!

The kind of God that does not reject us because of our mistakes, but demands  we sin no more.

The kind of God that will always love the Good in us, but will no longer allow the lies we use as excesses.

The God who will love us always, care for us always, but who will no longer Mother us . For His children are grown , and no longer needs to be suckled. For those who are indeed His children know, what it is He expects of us. We can no long play the fool. We can no longer put off doing what is right. Or say we don't know what we are expected to do, be or live!

We can no longer make excuses because , we were too busy with our children, our homes or our jobs. We can no longer preach to others, blame or point fingers, tell others what they should do to be saved etc etc.

Our world is indeed a creation of our beliefs, understandings, choices and actions.  We can no longer accept animals as our guides, karma as yesterdays blame, or even the idea that we are enlightend more then the person living next to us. For we all know what is right.   We all know when we dont speak the truth . We are all children of God, so how can we pretend we are not?

Th God I love today and the Christ I have always loved,  expected me to be Loved by Him and to Love Him in return. To Respect HIm not out of Fear, nor just to please Him, but rather because we Love Him. Becuase we love Him more ,or at least as much , as we have learned to Love ourselves.
