As a Christian, I have been unhappy with the arguments given regarding gays who wish to marry. So, after looking up the meaning of the word marriage, I came to see, that according to its definition, the word “marriage”, has little to do with anything spiritual.
And as a Christian, my spiritual understanding takes precedent.
Who would ever have thought, that in today’s world, the word “marriage” would be seen as controversial? When one looks up its meaning, you will find it applies more to possession and chattels, than anything else. Nowhere, is there an adjective under that meaning, which includes the word love? So, whether gay, or straight, I believe, neither would be fighting for its use, if they knew fully, it’s meaning. So, as Tina Turner once sang, “What’s love got to do with it?” According to Roget’s Thesaurus, nothing! This fought over word, has nothing to do with love!
You can be gay and be in love, as well as being straight and be in love. But as we just learned, the defined word, has nothing to do with love! So that means you can love and not be married, that’s a choice. Just ask Goldie Hawn and what’s his name? Oh yeah, that might be just the point. We also know that you don’t have to be straight, to be capable of love. So what’s the fuss?
I believe the ideal of what we speak, has two different meanings, inherent in its argument
Christians seek marriage as the sanction of their commitment to one another and God. And here is where it gets a little sticky.
To live as One, implies a spiritual union. What is being sanctioned in this marriage of man and women is Gods gift of co-creation. Within this union is the nature that will allow for a third element to be born. That gift is the ability to create life. That is the meaning behind all consecrated unions, the ability to produce life! This co-creative ability can only happen, because of the nature of the union of a man and a woman. It is that is seen as sacred, and is sanctified in marriage... And it is because of this God given gift of pro-creation, that the sanctity of marriage exits. This is the reasoning behind the denial of the word “marriage”, when it comes to the belief of Christian thought.
Other unions I’m sure, are acceptable by God, after all we are all his children. However not all are sanctified with His gift of creation. This was the meaning behind Christ’s first miracle, the changing of water into wine. It’s where the civil union of a man and women, was elevated to a spiritual one, by the understanding of that transformation.
So for all those gays, who believe their rights are being violated You are 100% right! You should, under our country’s law, have the same rights to property, insurance, and benefits, as anyone else. However, if you are seeking equality in spirituality, than I believe you are seeking it from the wrong provider.
